Just How Big Is Apple?[infographic]

While many people use Apple devices every day, few may realize just how big Apple really is. Having started out as a computer manufacturer, Apple made the move into the mobile device market with the introduction of the incredibly successful iPhone. In 2011 alone, 72 million units were sold. That is almost a combined weight heavy enough to rival the Eiffel Tower.

Since the iPhone, Apple has released the unbelievably successful iPad. Now nearing it's third variant, the iPad sold 3 million devices during the first three days of release. It also now still holds an average sales number of 11 per second. With 56.4 million iPads projected to sell in 2012, this may be enough to push iOS device ownership above that of cars. However, Apple still credits nearly 40 percent of it's revenue to the iPhone alone.

With new devices on the horizon and sales still going strong, Apple is truly a technological giant in the information age.

samsung nokia

Specifically, Samsung announced record profit of 8.85 trillion. won (about € 5.91 billion), almost twice those of the corresponding period last year, the company attaches to the huge increase in sales of mobile devices (smartphones / tablets) and televisions.

As regards the first manufacturers, according to the report of the Strategy Analytics, the Samsung has allocated 93.5 million phones in Q1 2012, while Nokia was second with 82.7 million devices.

"Shipments of Nokia globally fell by 24% to 82.7 million units in Q1 2012. The volumes declined because sales have stagnated in low-end featurephones in developing markets, but also because the high-end Lumia smartphones failed to replace the void left by the rapid retreat of Symbian smartphones. The Nokia was the largest appliance manufacturer in the world from 1998 to 2011 for 14 years before you hand over the reigns to Samsung this quarter "

We should note here that these figures relate to those available devices on the market and not selling.

Excellent omens for the Samsung and certainly the future looks bright with the upcoming presentation of Samsung Galaxy S III.

Oracle vs. Google: The battle has begun!

oracle vs google

After many years of waiting the notorious legal battle between Oracle and Google began last week after the judge failed to persuade all this time the two sides to compromise.

Please remember that the Oracle accuses Google of copied part of the Java code without obtaining the necessary authorization. For its part, Google admits that it has essentially copied the Java code but denies having permission to do so on the grounds that Android does not require permission.

It all started officially in 2009 when Oracle acquired Sun but things had started earlier. The Android was founded in 2003 and two years later was acquired by Google. Andy Rubin wrote then to Larry Page:

oracle vs google

Google wanted to make the open-source Android but he knew that Sun would not see in with a positive eye. Rubin believed that Google had simply paid the required amount for the licensing of Java. The years passed, however, and finally in 2007 the attitude had changed completely ignoring the Sun. "Please do not show to any officer or attorney of the Sun», Rubin warned an engineer in 2008.

Oracle notes that at the time Google is important recruit staff from the Java team at Sun, who worked under former executive of Sun Eric Schmidt. Oracle implicitly suggests that this staff was vital for the creation of "Java OS".

Tim Lindholm, Distinguished Engineer at Sun, helped in the creation of the original Java VM and penetrated to Google the same period the company acquired Android. In 2010 when Android was successful by Larry Page Lindholm asked to explore alternatives to Java. Lindholm concluded that the alternatives were not good and that we should negotiate with the authorization of Sun (Google tried enough to keep this e-mail out of court).

Oracle presented the court with code copied by Google. The code does not belong in public libraries (classes), but in private and Google will work very hard to justify itself. The case is certainly a long way ahead of many technical and legal details. You should wait until the end to see a possible positive practical to Oracle deciding what will it mean for Android and its users.

Huge Nokia drop in the first quarter of the year

nokia drop

Nokia has released its financial results for the the first quarter of 2012 and unfortunately the numbers are disappointing. Apart from the total losses of $ 1.7 billion, an equally serious blow is the huge drop in sales in major Chinese market.

More specifically, in the period last year sales of Nokia in Greater China decreased by 62%, falling from 23.9 million units to 9.2. Counting and drops in prices, Nokia saw its revenues to decline by $ 1.9 billion to $ 577 million just in the last quarter.

The determining factor seems to be turning more and more Chinese Android devices like the iPhone despite the prohibitive price.

But the rest of the world things are much more favorable to Nokia, the company is experiencing significant decline in Europe (32%) and America (50%).

Samsung and Apple receive 95% of the profits in mobile market

According to a survey by Canaccord Genuity Apple and Samsung «receive" 95 percent of the profits in the area of mobile devices at least during the fourth quarter of 2011.

Earnings are a very important parameter with which to measure the success of a company in its field and it seems that Apple can rightly be proud of having 95 percent accounts for 80 percent of its own.

Things for other manufacturers is not as good as you can tell because most companies (using Android) can not distinguish from each other more intensifying competition between them while Apple enjoys the solitude of the peak.

The numbers are not encouraging, however, nor for other manufacturers that use different operating systems, like RIM, HTC and Nokia. Apple has managed to create a strong brand name superseding sales. Among the manufacturers only Android Samsung seems to stand out in the order that the Galaxy has the scene with strong sales.
