Samsung YOUM: The flexible AMOLED displays acquire a new brand name!

The operation of flexible AMOLED screen becomes it's official name from Samsung, proving that we will soon see such commercial devices marketed.

The company decided to launch this technology called YOUM, promising thinner, lighter and more durable (as stated unbreakable) screens, compared with today's AMOLED and LCD-TFT.

As you can see in the screenshots, the difference is due to the layers used for the construction of new flexible AMOLED (YOUM). An LCD display consists usually of 6 layers (two of which are glass), while the OLED of 4 (2 are also glass). The use of glass layer is responsible for the fragility of today's screens.

However, the innovation of YOUM that replaces the layers of glass with film TFT, making it much more durable and more easily editable for designing new devices, as we have seen in several examples, prototypes from Samsung.

The good news is that mass production will start in the quarter in which we live, and the first commercial devices are available at the end of 2012.
