Twitter with a very promising initiative announced Innovator's Patent Agreement, an agreement under which the companies promised to use the patents of their engineers for defensive purposes unless they receive the express permission of the authors of these patents. He says, indeed, that will enable engineers to maintain control of these patents the right to use as they wish.
The move comes shortly after the revelation that the popular feature 'pull to refresh' that exists in iOS applications is now patented in the name of Twitter Inc. With this agreement, the company promises that it will use its rights against other companies in the area.
The agreement will also apply if the patent ownership is changed because of a takeover, for example by giving the control to the original inventor. This consolidation strengthens the intellectual property, but denied the power of the lawyers who use the various patents on pipelines.
Twitter assures that employees can be assured that patents are filed and the company will only be used as a shield and never as a weapon. You can read the full text of the agreement here. It will be interesting to see what the companies will participate in this initiative.
